Tuscan wine colors, Chianti wine

White, red, rosé.. Tuscan wine color isn’t just one. By tradition it seems Tuscan wine has to be red. But it isn’t always true.

Among Tuscan wines there are some excellent white, as Moscadello di Montalcino, Ansonica, Vernaccia di San Gimignano, Bianco Valdinievole and Bianco Pitigliano, and rosé, as well as some wines produced in Capalbio, Argentario and Elba island. Let’s not forget Vin Santo, a dessert sweet white Tuscan wine.

No doubt red wine is the most well-known and produced in Tuscany, famous for Chianti wines, Brunello di Montalcino, Nobile di Montepulciano and the Super Tuscan wines. But it’s not enough to say red, there are many different types. In fact you can recognize the age of wine by its color.

Chianti young wines are bright red almost purple, that shows they aren’t aged in bottles or barrels. Others are ruby red within a range of intensity.

Aged wines are burgundy red, a color for meditation wines to match some rich dishes. Lately it’s trendy to serve them as appetizers with seasoned cheese and cured meat. Some much aged wines, refined in oak barrels, are red with orange nuances. This is because wine loses anthocyanins by oxidation.

Regarding rosè wines you have to know that in Tuscany aren’t produced anylonger industrially. There has been a rediscovery of natural and authentic wine.

Rosè wines are produced with San Giovese, or Malvasia Nera or Merlot and Aleatico, or Cabernet and Aleatico, in Maremma, south of Tuscany.

Despite what usually people think, Tuscany is the land of white wines too. There are of very important: Vernaccia di San Gimignano, Vermentino, Moscadello di Montalcino and many others. Their color is straw or amber.

Vin Santo colors, instead, are bright from straw yellow to gold. This kind of wine, among the most famous white dessert wine, is produced with Trebbiano and Malvasia. But there is red and rosè too, when they use Sangiovese to produce it. The color is pale or marked pink.
